King's End & Market End (Bicester)

The 'King's End' part of Bicester got its name due to it once belonging to the manor of Kirtlington (which was owned by Royalty during the 11th century)!

'Market End' was originally called 'Bury End' (being derived from the Old English term 'burh', meaning 'fortified town'; this could also have been how the River Bure got its name!). It was changed to Market End sometime after 1279, when King Henry III granted the town the right to hold its own market.

The map below is borrowed from Bicester Local History Society, and is dated 1833. It shows the 2 manors of King's End & Market End.
